Re-evaluating your goals

As a self-motivated individual you are likely to have career goals that you have set for yourself and track your progress against. To stay motivated it's important to regularly re-evaluate these goals and let go of the goals that are no longer authentic or positive for you.

To re-evaluate your goals start by writing out a list of what they currently are and check in as to how you feel when you read each one.

If you feel motivated or excited by each goal that's great. If your motivation is waning or you feel that you aren't making progress against that goal then consider modifying it or dropping it.

I also recommend getting out a blank piece of paper and brainstorming ideas for new goals that you've never had before. They may not all make the cut, but forcing yourself to come up with brand new goals is a great way to get reinspired and potentially move your life in a wonderful new direction.

Not sure if your goals are authentic? In Chapter 4 of Maximum You I share an exercise for identifying and letting go of goals that are no longer authentic to you. This can be a big relief and free up mental space and energy for new more exciting goals.

My top questions for mental spring cleaning

Our internal narrative has a powerful influence on how we feel about our lives. If you find yourself constantly overthinking about a particular area of your career or frequently having negative thoughts about yourself then it's time to work on changing your thoughts.

The first step in behavioural change is awareness, by identifying the regular thoughts you are having you can initiate a change in your thought patterns.

Start by making a list of the main topics you find yourself thinking about.

For each topic make a list of any repetitive thoughts you have on these topics.

Ask yourself if these thoughts are helpful or unhelpful to you?

Write down a list of what you would like to stop thinking about.

Finally write a list of what you would like to think about instead.

An additional way to change your thoughts is to make a note and keep on your desk or fridge, somewhere you will see it each morning, as a reminder of the things you do want to focus on. When you catch yourself in an old thought loop that isn't helpful pick one of these new topics and move your mental focus onto that.

Book of the month

Eckhart Tolle is my ultimate mindfulness guru. His teachings on how to still your mind and enjoy the present are incredibly powerful and a great tool for a mental reset. I found his book The Power of Now to be hugely helpful and practical in breaking negative thought cycles and feeling calmer and happier.
